Silver Starlite Orchestra video trailer

A compilation of excerpts from the Silver Starlite Orchestra’s February 13, 2022 performance at the Roxbury Arts Alliance’s Investors Bank Theater in Succasunna, NJ. Songs include the Gershwin standard ’S Wonderful, featuring vocalist Corinn Springer-Pullen; Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol’s Caravan; Call Me Irresponsible, sung by Glenn Fogarty; the Latin classic Tico Tico; Billy Joel’s Just the Way You Are; and the jazz standard Avalon, sung by Corinn.

The Nearness of You

Glenn Fogarty sings the beautiful classic The Nearness of You, written by Hoagy Carmichael and Ned Washington. (Recorded February 13, 2022 at the Roxbury Arts Alliance)

Tico Tico

The band gets into a Latin groove with Tico Tico, with solos from tenor saxophonist Kevin Loughman and lead alto saxophonist Ray Johnston. (Recorded February 13, 2022 at the Roxbury Arts Alliance)

The Odd Couple

One of the great themes from ’70s TV shows is the theme from The Odd Couple, penned by Neal Hefti. Here’s Silver Starlite’s rendition, featuring solos by trumpeter Tom Bender (playing flugelhorn here) and tenor saxophonist Kevin Loughman. (Recorded February 13, 2022 at the Roxbury Arts Alliance)

I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm

I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm was written by Irving Berlin and introduced in 1937. In the late 1940s Les Brown had a hit recording of it with an arrangement that is still popular with big bands today. Since then, the song has become a standard part of the holiday repertoire. Here, vocalist Glenn Fogarty warms things up with his rendition. (Recorded February 13, 2022 at the Roxbury Arts Alliance)

Caravan

Co-written by Duke Ellington and his long-time valve trombonist Juan Tizol and first heard in 1936, the sinuous lines and exotic feel of Caravan have made it a jazz standard. Silver Starlite features solos by tenor saxophonist Kevin Loughman and drummer Walt Perelli in this performance. (Recorded February 13, 2022 at the Roxbury Arts Alliance)

Just Friends

Originally from the library of Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show band, this arrangement of the jazz standard Just Friends prominently features a trumpet solo, performed here by lead trumpeter (and webmaster, writing about himself in the third person) Bill Ash. (Recorded February 13, 2022 at the Roxbury Arts Alliance)

’S Wonderful

Vocalist Corinn Springer-Pullen lends her special style to this performance of the Gershwin classic ’S Wonderful. Joining Corinn in the spotlight are soloists Kevin Loughman on tenor sax and Tom Bender on trumpet. (Recorded February 13, 2022 at the Roxbury Arts Alliance)

A Foggy Day

Another foray into the Gershwin songbook by vocalist Corinn Springer-Pullen finds her singing A Foggy Day—appropriately enough, since Corinn has actually performed “in foggy London town.” Ray Johnston lends a hand with an alto sax solo. (Recorded February 13, 2022 at the Roxbury Arts Alliance)

Call Me Irresponsible

Vocalist Glenn Fogarty is featured in an arrangement of Call Me Irresponsible that simmers, surges, and swings from start to finish. (Recorded February 13, 2022 at the Roxbury Arts Alliance)
